Parking near Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal is easiest when you choose by trip length, budget and whether you need covered parking. These are the five options most drivers need to know:
Closest outdoor parking: Southern Esplanade Car Park is beside the terminal precinct and costs $2.40 per hour. It is the most convenient open-air option for most same-day reef trips.
Closest covered parking: The Pier offers underground parking opposite Reef Fleet Terminal. The first two hours are free, but this is not enough for a typical reef day trip. Expect to pay around $18 for an 8–9 hour stay, or $20 if your total parking time falls within the 9–16 hour rate.
Cheapest weekday all-day parking: Hartley Street Car Park is capped at $6 per day. It is also free on weekends and public holidays, although you should allow extra time for the longer walk to the terminal.
24/7 all-day alternative: Wharf Street Secure Parking at 1B Lake Street costs $7 for all-day drive-up parking. It has a 2.5-metre height limit and is entered from Lake Street.
Best option for multi-day parking: The Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal car park at Trinity Wharf costs $12 per day, with parking permits available for up to 10 days.
For a standard day trip, Southern Esplanade is the simplest choice when proximity matters. Hartley Street or Wharf Street Secure Parking will usually suit travellers who care more about the daily price, while Trinity Wharf is the practical choice when the car needs to stay overnight or for several days.

Here are some of the most popular Great Barrier Reef day tours from Cairns!
Location: Access via Pier Point Road, beside Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and Fogarty Park.
Southern Esplanade is an open-air Council car park with 290 spaces beside the Reef Fleet Terminal precinct. It is the easiest outdoor option for travellers who want a short walk to check-in. Accessible parking bays are also available.
Parking costs $2.40 per hour and is charged from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. It is free after 10pm and on public holidays. You can pay at the Council parking machines or with EasyPark; parking permits are not offered for this car park. Eight hours at the hourly rate costs $19.20. A reef-trip stay of about eight to nine hours costs $18 at The Pier, while Wharf Street is $7 all day and Hartley Street is capped at $6 on paid weekdays.

Location: 1 Pier Point Road, beneath The Pier shopping centre.
The Pier underground car park is the closest covered alternative. It is particularly convenient in tropical rain or when you are carrying children’s gear, snorkelling equipment or other bags. The car park operates from 6am to 10pm and has a 1.9-metre height restriction.
Parking is free for the first two hours. After that, the price rises according to the length of your stay, reaching $16 for 7–8 hours, $18 for 8–9 hours and $20 for 9–16 hours. The complete rate schedule appears in the comparison table above. The first two free hours do not cover a normal reef day.
An overnight fee of $16 applies from 10pm to 6am. If the vehicle is parked before 10pm or collected after 6am, the applicable daytime charge is added to the overnight fee.

Location: 1B Lake Street, Cairns QLD 4870
Wharf Street Secure Parking is at 1B Lake Street, with the vehicle entrance on Lake Street. All-day parking costs $7 at the drive-up rate, with entry after 6am and exit before 6am the following day.
The car park is open 24 hours and has a 2.5-metre height limit. It is not as close to Reef Fleet Terminal as Southern Esplanade or The Pier, so allow a little more time for the walk. For a full-day reef trip, however, the flat rate makes it one of the cheapest paid options in this part of Cairns.
Wharf Street Secure Parking and the council-run Lake Street Car Park are two separate facilities. For this car park, follow the address and Lake Street entrance at 1B Lake Street.

Location: Eastern end of Hartley Street, near Sheridan Street.
Hartley Street Car Park has 450 spaces. It also has dedicated bays for motorhomes, campervans, coaches and caravans that do not fit a standard bay. Standard-size vehicles must not use the RV bays. Accessible parking bays are also available.
The rate is $2.40 per hour, capped at $6 a day during paid hours from 8.30am to 5pm on weekdays. Parking is free after 5pm on weekdays, all weekend and on public holidays. You can pay at the Council machines or with EasyPark; parking permits are not offered for this car park.
Hartley Street is a good-value choice for an all-day stay or a large recreational vehicle. Allow extra time for the walk to Reef Fleet Terminal.

Location: Designated bays on Wharf Street between Lake and Sheridan streets, and in the southern CBD area around Grafton, Sheridan and Hartley streets.
Council’s 2026/27 parking schedule lists a $6 daily rate in these designated areas. The standard paid on-street rate elsewhere is $2.40 per hour. General paid-parking hours are 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 2pm on Saturdays. Pay at a Council machine or through EasyPark.
The $6 daily rate applies only to selected street spaces. Paying $6 does not let you ignore the time limit shown on the sign. For an eight-hour reef day, use only a bay whose sign permits the full stay. Street parking is free after 2pm on Saturdays. It is also free all day Sunday and on public holidays. At all other times, follow the sign for that bay.
Only choose street parking if you can arrive early and have another car park saved as a backup.
Location: Wharf Street, near Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal (Trinity Wharf).
Entrances: Wharf Street at Lake Street, or Wharf Street at Abbott Street.
You may also see this car park called Trinity Wharf parking. Ports North lists it as a pay-and-display long-term car park at $12 per day. The ticket machines accept cash or credit card and can issue a parking permit for up to 10 days.
This is usually the simplest option for a liveaboard—an overnight dive trip where you sleep on the boat—or another multi-day reef trip. Allow more walking time than you would for Southern Esplanade or The Pier, and select the correct return date when paying.

Location: Lake Street, between Shields and Aplin streets, beside the Lake Street bus terminal.
Lake Street Car Park has 300 spaces, accessible parking bays and a 1.9-metre height restriction. The rate is $1.50 per hour, capped at $10 a day.
Paid hours are 8.30am to 6pm on weekdays and 8.30am to 2pm on Saturdays. Parking is free after 6pm on weekdays, after 2pm on Saturdays, and all day Sunday and on public holidays. Because the car park uses boom gates, accessible parking permit holders must still pay the applicable fee.
For a single reef trip, Lake Street is cheaper than the waterfront car parks but farther from the terminal. Allow extra walking time and decide to use it before you reach the waterfront.

Location: 34 Esplanade, Cairns City.
Hilton Cairns offers secure, covered underground parking close to Reef Fleet Terminal. Self-parking costs $30 per day, while valet parking costs $40. The maximum vehicle height is 1.8 metres. EV charging is available, and drivers can leave and re-enter during the booking period.
At $30 per day, Hilton is expensive for a standard reef day. Choose it if covered security, EV charging or the ability to leave and re-enter matters more than price.

You are unlikely to find free parking close to Reef Fleet Terminal for a full-day reef trip. The Pier offers the first two hours free, but a typical reef tour lasts much longer. Two-hour CBD parking is too short for a normal full-day reef tour. The designated 8-hour street bays described above cost $6 per day and are not free.
Free options depend on the day and time. Hartley Street is free all weekend and on public holidays. Lake Street is free after 2pm Saturday, all day Sunday and on public holidays. Southern Esplanade is free after 10pm and on public holidays, which usually does not help with a standard morning reef departure.

EasyPark can be used for paid on-street parking and at Council car parks including Southern Esplanade and Hartley Street. Council machines may use pay-by-plate or pay-and-display. With pay-by-plate, enter your registration correctly and you do not need to return to the car with a paper ticket. With pay-and-display, place the printed ticket where instructed.
At Wharf Street Secure Parking, scan the QR code inside the car park or pay through the Secure Parking app. Lake Street operates with boom gates. The Cruise Liner Terminal ticket machines accept credit card or cash, while The Pier and Hilton use their own commercial entry and payment systems. Before leaving any car park, check the registration or ticket details, paid-until time, maximum stay and vehicle-height restrictions. An app cannot extend parking beyond the limit shown on the sign.

For a full-day reef tour: calculate parking time from when you leave the car until you expect to return—not just the time spent on the boat. Avoid two-hour free bays. Southern Esplanade and The Pier keep the walk short. Wharf Street Secure Parking has a $7 flat rate and 24-hour access. Hartley Street is capped at $6 on paid weekdays and is free on weekends and public holidays, though the walk is longer. A designated 8-hour street bay is another $6 option when a suitable space is available.
For overnight or liveaboard travel: the Cruise Liner Terminal car park costs $12 per day and offers permits for up to 10 days. Wharf Street’s $7 rate covers entry after 6am and exit before 6am the next day; it is not a continuous multi-day permit. At The Pier, the $16 overnight fee is added to any daytime parking charges.
For campervans and RVs: Hartley Street has dedicated large-vehicle bays. The 2.5-metre clearance at Wharf Street gives taller cars and utes more room than The Pier or Lake Street, and Secure Parking lists it for 4WD parking. It does not advertise dedicated RV or caravan bays. Vehicles under 1.9 metres may also fit The Pier or Lake Street, while Hilton has a lower 1.8-metre limit. Measure the full vehicle height, including roof racks and roof-mounted equipment, before entering a covered car park.

Use the check-in time on your own booking confirmation because Reef Fleet Terminal operators do not all use the same schedule. If you are driving, add at least 20–30 minutes for entering the precinct, finding a bay, paying and walking to the correct desk. Allow extra time during school holidays, major events and wet weather. Add more time if you are travelling with children, older passengers or bulky gear.
Allow parking time on top of the operator’s required check-in time. If your first choice is full, go straight to your backup instead of circling beside the terminal. For the address, check-in counters and boarding process, use our Reef Fleet Terminal Cairns Guide.

Decide where to park the night before. Check your tour time, travel date, vehicle height and how far everyone in your group can comfortably walk. Save the address of a second car park in your phone. Allow time to pay and walk to check-in without rushing. If you are staying in central Cairns, walking or a short transfer may still be easier than parking.

Parking information update
Parking locations, rates and time limits in this guide were checked against Cairns Regional Council, Ports North and individual car park operator information in August 2026. Parking conditions can change, so follow the signs displayed at the parking bay or car park entrance.
