  • Excellent day trip with a very experienced friendly driver with good knowledge of sites, customs and history . Morning tea and lunch were both tasty and enjoyable , The stop at the fig Tree was enhanced by watching tree kangaroo. The Paronella park was extremely interesting- what a monument to one man’s dream! The park tour guide was very theatrical in his presentation which made the tour even more interesting.

  • The boat tour to Frankland Island was very well organised. Every detail was being well taken care of by every one in the team. Food was plenty and delicious. My wife and I, both beginners in snorkeling, were being guided by the Japanese lady who showed us beautiful coral and colorful fishes. A guided walk around the area was amazing with opportunities to see special rock formation, shells, sea creatures including baby shark and limo fish.

  • Absolutely fantastic, loved each 3 snorkel spots and the face that I could rent a go pro. I would really recommend it to everyone, only improvement could be that the only guided snorkeling with a staff member for unconfident people is on the 3rd snorkel stop, where it would make more sense for it to be on the first stop. Otherwise amazing and great value for money.

Frequently asked questions about Cairns tours

What are the best Cairns tours for first-time visitors?

For first-time visitors, the best Cairns tours usually include a Great Barrier Reef cruise, a Green Island or Fitzroy Island day trip, the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail, and a Daintree Rainforest or Cape Tribulation tour. If you only have a few days, choose one reef experience and one rainforest experience so you can see the two natural wonders Cairns is famous for.

Which Great Barrier Reef tour from Cairns should I choose?

Choose an outer reef cruise if you want a classic full-day snorkelling or diving experience with more time on the reef. Choose an island-style tour such as Green Island and Outer Great Barrier Reef Day Tour from Cairns or Fitzroy Island Full-Day Trip with Optional Extras from Cairns if you prefer beaches, easy walks and optional reef activities.

What is the difference between outer reef tours and island tours?

Outer reef tours generally travel farther from Cairns and focus on snorkelling, diving and reef platforms or reef sites. Island tours are usually more relaxed, with beach time, short walks, optional snorkelling and activities that suit travellers who want a softer pace. Families and less confident swimmers often prefer island or pontoon-style experiences.

Can non-swimmers visit the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns?

Yes. Non-swimmers can still enjoy the Great Barrier Reef by choosing tours with glass-bottom boats, semi-submersible rides, underwater observatories, scenic flights or stable reef platforms. Many reef tours also provide flotation devices and crew assistance, but you should always check each product page for exact inclusions before booking.

When is the best time to visit Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef?

Cairns tours operate year-round. The dry season from around May to October is popular for milder weather, lower humidity and generally good reef conditions. The warmer months from November to April can still be excellent for reef trips, although tropical rain and stinger season are factors to consider. Reef operators usually provide stinger suits when required.

How much do Cairns reef tours usually cost?

Prices vary depending on the operator, travel date, reef location and inclusions. Half-day reef trips and island ferries are usually more budget-friendly, while full-day outer reef cruises, diving packages and scenic flight combinations usually cost more. Check the live product pages or explore Great Barrier Reef tours from Cairns for current prices and inclusions.

What should I bring on a Cairns reef or island tour?

Bring swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a change of clothes and a reusable water bottle. Snorkelling equipment is usually included on many reef tours, but inclusions vary by operator. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking seasickness tablets before departure.

Are Cairns tours suitable for families with kids?

Yes. Many Cairns tours are family-friendly, especially island day trips, reef pontoons, Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail tours, Cairns Aquarium and wildlife experiences such as Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures. For younger children or less confident swimmers, choose tours with easy access, shaded areas, glass-bottom boats or guided activities. For broader planning, see our things to do in Cairns with kids guide.

What are the best day trips from Cairns besides the reef?

Popular day trips from Cairns besides the reef include Kuranda Rainforest, Skyrail and Train Day Tour from Cairns, Daintree, Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation Tour from Cairns, Atherton Tablelands Adventure Day Tour from Cairns, waterfalls, wildlife parks and rainforest adventures.
