Yes — you can sleep above or below the water at Reefworld on Hardy Reef, reached from Airlie Beach, Daydream Island or Hamilton Island. Reefsleep gives you a double Reefbed on the open-air upper deck, while Reefsuites gives you a private underwater room with reef-facing windows.
Choose Reefsleep for the night-sky setting, sociable deck atmosphere and lower price. Choose Reefsuites for privacy, a proper indoor room and underwater views after the day visitors leave. If the overnight price or two-day commitment does not suit your trip, choose the standard Reefworld day cruise and enjoy the same Hardy Reef pontoon without staying the night.

The Whitsundays’ dedicated reef accommodation is at Reefworld, a permanently moored pontoon at Hardy Reef. The overnight experience is not an island resort, a sailing trip or a boat cabin. You spend the day using the pontoon, remain after the regular day guests depart and sleep either on its top deck or in one of two underwater suites.
Cruise Whitsundays operates both options. Reefsleep is currently advertised from A$895 per person twin share, while Reefsuites starts from A$1,495 per person twin share. Those are premium experiences, but the value is not simply the bed: the stay includes two days of reef access, meals, selected beverages and guided activities, plus a quiet evening and morning at Hardy Reef.
This article is specifically about accommodation at Reefworld. An overnight yacht, bareboat or private charter offers a different Whitsundays experience and usually sleeps around islands or sheltered anchorages rather than on the outer-reef pontoon.
Reefsleep places a double Reefbed beneath a weatherproof cover on the pontoon’s upper deck. You are outdoors, with the sea and night sky around you, and share the deck and bathroom facilities with the small overnight group. It is the stronger choice when atmosphere matters more than room privacy and you are comfortable with a premium camping-style setup.
Reefsuites has only two underwater rooms. Each can be configured with a king or twin beds and has floor-to-ceiling reef windows plus a glass-walled ensuite. Choose it for a honeymoon, anniversary or one-off stay where the room itself is the main experience.
The regular Great Barrier Reef Adventure uses the same Reefworld pontoon and includes four hours at Hardy Reef, snorkelling equipment, the underwater observatory, a semi-submarine tour and meals during the day. It is the practical alternative for families with younger children, travellers on a tighter budget or anyone who prefers a hotel bed onshore. WTO’s Great Barrier Reef Pontoon Day Tour from Airlie Beach maps directly to that mainland-based choice.

Reefsleep and Reefsuites guests travel to Hardy Reef with the regular day cruise. Published departure and return times are 8.00 am to 6.10 pm the following day from Airlie Beach, 7.35 am to 6.05 pm from Daydream Island, and 9.00 am to 5.00 pm from Hamilton Island.
During the first day, you share Reefworld’s snorkelling area, observatory and semi-submarine with day visitors. After their vessel leaves, the overnight group has the pontoon to itself. The evening adds sunset drinks and dinner, while the next morning brings breakfast and another quieter period on the reef before the next day boat arrives.
The overnight stay therefore suits travellers who value time and atmosphere more than ticking off extra locations. You remain at one outer-reef base rather than moving between multiple snorkelling sites, but you experience Hardy Reef when the pontoon is at its least busy.
Both experiences include return cruising, the overnight accommodation, breakfast, two morning teas, two lunches, afternoon tea and dinner. Selected beer and wine are served from 5.00 pm, with soft drinks available throughout the stay.
Reef activities include a guided snorkelling safari, snorkelling equipment, wetsuits or stinger suits, the underwater observatory and semi-submarine rides. Scenic helicopter flights and scuba diving can be added at extra cost, subject to the operator’s conditions and availability.
The key difference is the accommodation. Reefsleep includes the open-air Reefbed and shared facilities. Reefsuites includes a private underwater room and ensuite. The core reef activities and meals are otherwise designed around the same small overnight experience.

Choose Reefsleep when sleeping under the stars is the point of the trip. It suits couples, friends and solo travellers who enjoy a more social setting and do not need a conventional hotel room. It also gives you the full overnight schedule at a substantially lower starting price than Reefsuites.
The boundary is comfort. You will hear the ocean, feel the outdoor conditions and use shared bathroom facilities. That is part of the appeal for an adventurous traveller, but it is not the right compromise when private facilities, climate-controlled sleeping or complete seclusion are essential.
If you want the quiet Reefworld evening but prefer a room, choose Reefsuites. If neither accommodation style feels proportionate to your budget, the day cruise delivers the pontoon’s main reef activities in one day.
Choose Reefsuites when the accommodation itself needs to feel exceptional. The reef-facing windows let you watch marine life from bed and from the ensuite, and the two-room limit keeps the experience private after the day visitors leave.
It is best suited to a special occasion, a couple prioritising privacy or a traveller who wants the rare underwater-room experience more than the lowest possible cost. Twin bedding is available, so the room is not restricted to couples.
The premium is significant: the current twin-share starting price is A$600 per person above Reefsleep. Choose it only when the private room and underwater view are central to the decision. Otherwise, Reefsleep gives you the same two-day reef program and the stronger stars-above-the-reef atmosphere.
For a family with children aged six or older, either overnight can work if the children are comfortable with a long marine itinerary. Cruise Whitsundays sets a minimum age of six and does not offer separate child pricing for Reefsleep or Reefsuites. For children under six, choose the standard Reefworld day trip instead.
For non-swimmers, the overnight still has value. The underwater observatory and semi-submarine allow dry reef viewing, while the evening, meals and remote setting do not depend on entering the water. Reefsuites is the stronger choice if watching the reef from a private room is the main goal; Reefsleep is the stronger choice if the deck, sunset and stars matter more.
For nervous swimmers who want to try the water, snorkelling gear and flotation equipment are provided and the guided snorkel safari adds structure. A traveller who does not want a long boat journey should choose a scenic flight or a different island-based experience, because every Reefworld overnight requires the outer-reef crossing.

Pack lightly. Bring swimmers, a towel, sun-protective clothing, a hat, sunscreen, a change of clothes, sleepwear, toiletries, essential medication and a light layer for the evening and return cruise. Use a small overnight bag rather than large luggage.
Snorkelling equipment and stinger protection are included, so there is no need to bring fins or a wetsuit. Reefsleep guests should pack with an outdoor night in mind; Reefsuites guests can pack as they would for a compact premium hotel stay.
If you are prone to seasickness, prepare for the crossing before departure and choose a departure point that fits your existing accommodation. Travelling from Hamilton Island avoids first transferring back to Airlie Beach, while Airlie Beach is the natural departure for mainland-based stays.
Choose Reefsleep for an adventurous night under the stars and the more accessible of the two overnight prices. Choose Reefsuites for privacy, a private ensuite and an underwater view that remains part of the experience after you close the door. Choose the Reefworld day trip when the overnight premium, minimum age or two-day schedule does not fit.
The strongest reason to stay is the time after the day visitors leave. If a quieter evening and morning on Hardy Reef feels more valuable than visiting several locations, the Whitsundays gives you a genuine way to sleep on the Great Barrier Reef.
