What to expect

Take your seat beside a large aircraft window and watch the Great Barrier Reef open out beneath you in bands of turquoise water, coral and white sand. This 40-minute flight gives you a sense of the reef’s true scale without committing a full day to a boat trip, making it an easy choice when time in Cairns is limited or a memorable addition to a separate snorkelling day.

Within minutes of leaving Cairns, the city and coastline give way to Green Island and a broad sweep of reefs, islands and sand cays. The usual flight path may take in Upolu Cay, Oyster Reef, Vlasoff Cay, Michaelmas Reef and Arlington Reef, with views extending towards Cape Grafton, Double Island, the Northern Beaches and Palm Cove. From the air, changes in water depth and coral structure become part of one vast connected landscape, with up to 140 kilometres of reef visible in suitable conditions.

Listen through your headset as the pilot points out the landmarks below and keep your camera ready for the shifting colours and patterns around each reef. There is also a chance to spot manta rays, green turtles, dugongs, sharks and seasonal whales, adding an extra moment of excitement when wildlife appears.

Every passenger has a window seat in an air-conditioned aircraft. Check in at Cairns General Aviation 15 to 30 minutes before your selected departure, then return to the same terminal after approximately 40 minutes in the air. You land back in Cairns having seen the reef as a complete living system rather than a single island or snorkelling site.

Frequently asked questions

Is 40 minutes enough time to see the Great Barrier Reef from the air?

Yes. The flight path is designed to show a wide cross-section of the reef rather than circle one location. In approximately 40 minutes, you can see Green Island, multiple reef systems and sand cays while the pilot points out the main landmarks below.

Does every passenger get a window seat?

Yes. Every passenger is seated beside a large window, giving you a clear view and plenty of opportunities to take photos. A particular row or the co-pilot seat cannot be guaranteed because seating is finalised according to aircraft loading requirements.

Can I see the Great Barrier Reef without taking a boat or going snorkelling?

Yes. You remain inside the aircraft throughout the experience, so no swimming, snorkelling or boat travel is involved. It is a particularly good option for travellers who are short on time or prefer to experience the reef without spending a full day at sea.

Where exactly do I check in?

Check in at Daintree Air Services in the Cairns General Aviation area at 97 Tom McDonald Drive, Aeroglen. This is separate from the main domestic and international passenger terminals. Please arrive 15 to 30 minutes before your selected departure.

Are hotel pickup and drop-off included?

No. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included in the standard booking. You will need to make your own way to the General Aviation terminal for check-in.

Can infants and young children join the flight?

Yes. Infants under two years old may travel on an accompanying adult’s lap, with one adult required for each infant. Children who are old enough to occupy their own seat will be seated beside a window like the other passengers.

Is the aircraft wheelchair accessible?

No. The aircraft is not wheelchair accessible, and passengers must be able to step into the aircraft without assistance.

What happens if the weather is unsuitable for flying?

Flights only operate when conditions are suitable. If the flight is cancelled because of adverse weather, you will be offered another date or a full refund. Minimum passenger numbers also apply, with rebooking or a refund available if the required number is not reached.
