What to expect

Keep your morning free and spend the afternoon discovering two of the Whitsundays’ most recognisable places. Departing from Hamilton Island, this four-hour escape combines a lively high-speed boat ride with the famous Hill Inlet lookout and time on Whitehaven Beach, returning in time to enjoy your evening back on the island.

Feel the Whitsundays open around you as your open-style vessel powers away from Hamilton Island and through the island-studded waterways. The ride is part of the adventure, with changing coastlines, tropical islands and open-water views unfolding along the way.

Step ashore near Hill Inlet and follow your Eco Host through the national park to the lookout platforms. From above, watch bright white sand and turquoise water form shifting patterns across the inlet, with plenty of opportunities to take in the view and capture one of the Whitsundays’ most iconic scenes.

Continue down towards the water, where soft silica sand and clear shallows invite you to slow the pace. Walk along the beach, cool off with a swim or settle onto the sand and enjoy the afternoon surroundings. A sunsuit or wetsuit and flotation devices are available for guests entering the water, with afternoon tea included during the experience.

The tour returns to Hamilton Island at around 4:30pm, leaving the evening free for dinner or a relaxed walk around the marina. The route and order of activities may change with the tides, wind and sea conditions, but the afternoon remains centred on Hill Inlet, Whitehaven Beach and the fun of exploring the Whitsundays by high-speed boat.

What a way to spend an afternoon. The crew were fantastic, super friendly and made sure everyone was comfortable. Snagged some amazing photos at Hill Inlet, the colours were unreal. Afternoon tea was a nice touch too. Best thing we did on Hamilton Island.

Loved every minute. The boat ride was fast and fun, got us out to Whitehaven quickly. The silica sand is so soft it almost feels fake. Guided walk to the lookout was well paced and the views were next level. Highly recommend this tour.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tour include snorkelling?

No. This experience focuses on the high-speed boat ride, the guided Hill Inlet lookout walk, Hill Inlet’s beaches and time on Whitehaven Beach. Swimming from the beach may be possible when conditions allow, but there is no separate reef snorkelling session.

How difficult is the walk to Hill Inlet Lookout?

The Hill Inlet lookout track is officially graded easy to moderate and is approximately 1.4 kilometres return. Allow around 40 minutes for the walk. It includes an uphill section, steps and some uneven ground, so comfortable walking shoes and independent mobility are important.

What is the high-speed boat ride like?

The open-style vessel can travel at speeds of up to 30 knots, making the boat journey an energetic part of the experience. Depending on the conditions, you may feel bumps, wind and sea spray as you travel through the Whitsundays.

Is this tour suitable for guests with back, neck or hip injuries or during pregnancy?

This tour is not suitable for guests with pre-existing back, neck or hip injuries. Guests in the third trimester of pregnancy cannot participate, while suitability during earlier stages of pregnancy depends on the weather and sea conditions.

What should I do if I am prone to seasickness?

The vessel’s open-style design and speed generally produce less of the slow rocking associated with larger boats, although sea conditions can still vary. If you are prone to seasickness, take your usual preventative medication before departure according to its directions.

Are toilets available during the tour?

Yes. The vessel has a toilet, although it cannot be used while the boat is moving. Basic toilet facilities are also available near the Hill Inlet lookout and at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach.

Should I choose the afternoon or morning departure?

Choose the afternoon departure if you want to keep the morning free and return at around 4:30pm. Check-in begins at 12:00pm for a 12:30pm departure. The morning option checks in at 7:30am, departs at 8:00am and returns at approximately 12:00pm, making it the better choice if you want the afternoon free.

Not a morning person so this afternoon departure was perfect. Hill Inlet at that time of day had incredible light for photos.
