What to expect

This is the Atherton Tablelands at its most fun. Swim in a volcanic crater lake, stand beneath a rainforest waterfall and have a go on the natural rock slide at Josephine Falls, all in one small-group day from Cairns. With the route and driving taken care of, you can focus on enjoying the places rather than planning how to reach them.

Expect a flexible journey through World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics rainforest, shaped around favourites such as Lake Eacham, Millaa Millaa Falls, Josephine Falls and the Cathedral Fig Tree. Cool off in clear freshwater, take photos beside tumbling falls and step beneath the vast aerial roots of a fig tree that has stood here for centuries. There is also a chance to spot turtles, platypuses, cassowaries and tree kangaroos as you travel through the Tablelands.

The small-group format gives the day a relaxed, social feel, with your guide sharing local stories, helping the group make the most of each stop and adjusting the pace to suit conditions. A picnic lunch, locally grown tea, plunger coffee and morning and afternoon snacks keep you fuelled between swims and rainforest walks.

Pickup begins at around 7.15am from selected Cairns locations, with Reef Fleet Terminal at Bus Bay 7 as the central meeting point. The exact order and combination of stops may change with weather and road conditions, allowing the guide to shape the day around the best places to visit. You return to Cairns after a full day of cool-water swims, rainforest scenery and Tablelands views.

A fabulous day spent walking through rainforests and experiencing the beauty of the stunning waterfalls and lake Eacham. We were fortunate to see a few platypuses and a cassowary in differing locations. Our tour guide Paige was the perfect host. She was patient, encouraging, fun and a safe and considerate driver.

Great day out with Anton (our guide) and the rest of our small touring group. We had a great time at the water slide, Millaa Millaa falls and looking for platypus (found one), flying fox (found lots) and Cassowaries. Anton was very knowledgeable and chilled and I would highly recommend this tour.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enjoy this tour if I do not want to swim?

Yes. Swimming is optional at the freshwater stops. You can stay dry, enjoy the rainforest and waterfalls, take photos and relax beside the water while other guests swim or use the natural rock slide.

How physically demanding is this tour?

You should be comfortable walking on natural ground that may be uneven, damp or slippery and getting in and out of freshwater swimming areas if you choose to swim. The individual walks are generally short, but reasonable mobility and fitness are helpful for the full day. The tour is not wheelchair accessible.

Is this tour suitable for children and families?

Guests aged 8 and over can join, and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. It is a good family option for children who enjoy swimming, nature and outdoor activities and who are comfortable with a full day that includes coach travel and several different stops.

Will we visit every location shown in the sample itinerary?

The route is flexible, so the exact combination and order of stops can vary. The guide selects from places such as Lake Eacham, Millaa Millaa Falls, Josephine Falls and the Cathedral Fig Tree according to weather, road conditions and the pace of the group. This allows time to enjoy the locations rather than rushing through a fixed checklist.

Does the tour still operate when it rains?

Yes, the tour normally operates in rainy weather, which is a natural part of visiting the Wet Tropics rainforest. The route or individual stops may be adjusted when weather or road conditions require it. A lightweight rain jacket and a dry change of clothes are useful on wetter days.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free and nut-related requirements can generally be accommodated when provided in advance. After booking, please contact us with the details, including the severity of any food allergy. Paleo, keto and seafood preferences are not offered as dedicated meal options.

How cold is the water at the swimming stops?

The freshwater can feel cool even on a warm Cairns day, particularly during winter when the Tablelands are often cooler than the coast. Bring a towel, dry clothes and a warm layer for after swimming. You can also enjoy every location without entering the water.

What wildlife might I see during the tour?

Keep watch for turtles around Lake Eacham and for platypuses, cassowaries, tree kangaroos and other rainforest wildlife across the Tablelands. These animals live freely in the area, so sightings are a natural bonus rather than a fixed part of the itinerary.

We really enjoyed this tour! The driver Paige was very conscientious about safe driving and Wolf was a big help and a lot of fun!! We saw a cassowary and a platapus!! Fun music on the drive and the sandwich lunch was pretty good! There was at least 3 hrs of driving but it was pretty broken up between swimming stops…One of our favorite tours for sure!
