Frequently asked questions

How does the aquarium visit work with the guided turtle experience?

Your ticket includes both general admission to Cairns Aquarium and an approximately 30-minute guided visit to the onsite turtle rehabilitation centre. Guided sessions currently run at 11.15am and 12.15pm daily. You can explore the aquarium at your own pace before or after your scheduled session during opening hours.

How much time should I allow for the full experience?

Allow around 2 to 3 hours for a relaxed visit. Most guests spend approximately 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the aquarium, with another 30 minutes for the guided turtle experience. You may want a little longer if you plan to attend the daily wildlife presentations, take photos or spend extra time at your favourite exhibits.

Which rescued turtles will I see during the visit?

You will meet sea turtles currently receiving care and learn about their individual rescue and recovery stories. As this is a working rehabilitation centre, the number and species of turtles can change as patients recover and return to the ocean. This means every visit offers a genuine look at the centre’s current conservation work.

Is this experience suitable for children and families?

Yes. The experience is suitable for all ages and combines colourful aquarium exhibits with an engaging educational presentation about rescued sea turtles. Children must remain with an adult throughout the visit. Families should also keep noise low inside the rehabilitation area so the recovering turtles can rest without disturbance.

Is the aquarium and turtle rehabilitation area accessible?

Yes. The aquarium has lifts, escalators and accessible toilets, and the main visitor route is suitable for wheelchairs and prams. Free wheelchair hire is available. Guests who cannot access the rehabilitation viewing deck can still see the turtles through a viewing window. Companion Card arrangements do not apply to the guided rehabilitation experience.

Can I take photos during the turtle visit?

Yes. Photography is welcome unless a sign or guide advises otherwise. Please switch off the flash, keep noise to a minimum and avoid touching the turtles, their tanks or anything inside the enclosures. These simple measures help protect the animals while they recover.

Is this a good activity for a rainy day in Cairns?

Yes. Cairns Aquarium is an indoor attraction and a great choice during rainy, humid or windy weather. You can explore Tropical North Queensland’s rivers, rainforest, mangroves and reef environments in comfort while still enjoying a memorable wildlife experience.
