What to expect

As the sun sets over the Great Barrier Reef, the underwater world transforms into a fascinating nocturnal landscape. Corals begin to glow, reef fish hide away, and powerful nighttime predators emerge. At the same time, reptiles, amphibians, and insects in nearby coastal forests come alive under the cover of darkness.

This exclusive Night at the Aquarium experience allows you to explore the hidden world of nocturnal creatures with the guidance of expert Wildlife Educators. Wander through the galleries after dark and see the reef in a way few visitors ever do — from glowing corals to the region’s largest predators in their nighttime habitat.

For those who wish to extend the evening, you can choose to add a specially prepared two-course dinner in the aquarium’s aquatic-themed restaurant (optional). Surrounded by panoramic marine displays, enjoy a memorable dining experience that combines wildlife discovery with fine cuisine.

We learned so much about all the animals. The tanks were the best we have seen in an aquarium, natural habitats for the animals! This was the best aquarium experience we have seen. Highly recommend to anyone travelling to Cairns!

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two booking options?

Both options include exclusive after-hours entry and the same 1.5-hour guided tour with a Wildlife Educator. Choose the tour-only option if you want a focused evening experience finishing at around 7.30pm. Choose the dinner option to continue with a two-course meal in the onsite aquatic-themed restaurant, with the evening finishing at around 9pm.

Where and when do I check in, and when does each option finish?

Check in at Cairns Aquarium, 5 Florence Street, at around 5.45pm for a 6pm guided tour. The tour-only option finishes at about 7.30pm, while guests with dinner sit down at around 7.45pm and finish at about 9pm. The aquarium is within walking distance of many central Cairns hotels, with street, metered and accessible parking available nearby.

What makes the aquarium different after dark?

The after-hours setting reveals a completely different side of the aquarium. Corals appear to glow, reef fish settle into shelter and sharks, rays, groupers and other nighttime predators become the focus. Your Wildlife Educator will lead you through 10 tropical ecosystems and explain how animals from the rainforest, rivers, reef and Coral Sea adapt when darkness falls.

Is this a self-guided visit, or do I stay with the guide?

This is a structured 1.5-hour guided experience led by a Wildlife Educator. You will move through the aquarium’s tropical ecosystems together, with time to pause at the main displays while your guide highlights nighttime behaviours that are easy to miss during a daytime visit. If you prefer to explore entirely at your own pace, daytime general admission is the better option.

Is this experience suitable for children and families?

Yes. This is an indoor, all-ages experience, with large marine displays, sharks, rays and engaging explanations from the Wildlife Educator. Families with younger children may prefer the tour-only option, which finishes at around 7.30pm, while the dinner option works well for families comfortable with a later evening.

Is the night tour wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The aquarium has lifts, escalators and accessible toilets throughout the attraction. The indoor exhibition route is suitable for guests using wheelchairs or mobility aids.

What dietary choices are available with dinner?

The two-course menu includes vegetarian and vegan main options, along with several dishes labelled gluten-free. After booking, please contact us with any dietary requirements.

The tour itself was great – we had a fantastic guide Laura who had the perfect balance of chatting and education while also allowing the audience to wander and experience the tanks on their own.

Our guide Jordan was amazing- I would highly recommend doing this night tour at the aquarium. Everything at the aquarium was related to things that you would see up in far north QLD. Our dinner right in front of a huge aquarium was fantastic- the food was amazing. One of the many things I’m super glad we did up there, and would do it again
