What to expect

Set out on a 90-minute wilderness cruise from the Port Arthur Historic Site and journey along the dramatic coastline of the Tasman Peninsula. As you glide across the water, admire rugged dolerite cliffs, sea caves, arches, and secluded white-sand beaches that define this spectacular region.

Cruise past Point Puer and the Isle of the Dead, two sites steeped in Tasmania’s colonial history, before marveling at the brilliant sands of Safety Cove and the tall dunes of Crescent Bay. As the boat rounds West Arthur Head, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Cape Raoul, framed by the towering 250-meter cliffs that rise dramatically from the ocean.

Keep your eyes peeled for playful Australian fur seals basking on the rocks, dolphins darting through the surf, and migrating whales breaching the waves during their seasonal journey. Look skyward to spot albatross and white-bellied sea eagles soaring above. With its mix of wild scenery, history, and wildlife, this cruise captures Tasmania’s untamed coastal beauty.

We really enjoyed this cruise from Port Arthur. We received a phone call exploring the whether conditions would prevent us from getting to the Cape and were given the option of going to another destination or rebooking for the next day. We rebooked because we really wanted to get to the Cape. We were so glad we did this because the Cape was spectacular and we got some awesome pics for our photo album. The best thing about this cruise was the two young fellas Drew and Hayden (hope I gig there names right, sorry if i didn't). They kept us entertained and made the trip extra fun!! Hayden had so many jokes which we absolutely loved and give him our 'seal' of approval

If you love dramatic coastlines and wildlife, this is for you. The weather was clear, so we had panoramic views all the way to Tasman Island. The crew pointed out eagles, seals, and even a whale tail in the distance. I’ve done cruises elsewhere in Australia, but this one felt so untouched and wild. It’s such a unique way to see this part of the island.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Port Arthur Historic Site entry ticket for this cruise?

Yes. Every guest needs entry because the departure jetty is inside the Historic Site. Choose the option that includes site entry, or book the cruise-only option if you already have a valid ticket and bring proof with you for check-in.

How do I get to the cruise, and where do I check in?

This booking starts in Port Arthur, so make your own way there and allow about 90 minutes by car from Hobart. Free parking is available in the Historic Site’s main car park; check in at the Visitor Centre, walk down to the jetty and be ready 15 minutes before departure.

Is the boat sheltered, and what should I wear?

Yes. The custom-built catamaran is enclosed on three sides, giving you shelter while keeping clear coastal views and room to move around. Dress in warm layers and bring a jacket, hat, sunscreen and your camera, as it can feel cooler out on the water.

What if I’m prone to seasickness?

The purpose-built boat handles these coastal conditions well, but you may still feel some swell on open water. Natural ginger tablets are available onboard, and sitting nearer the rear, keeping cool and looking toward the horizon can help if you’re sensitive to motion.

Is the cruise suitable for children?

Yes. Children of all ages are welcome, with no age or height restrictions. The 90-minute duration, sheltered seating and onboard toilet make it a manageable family outing; dress children warmly and consider how they usually cope on open water.

What wildlife might I see?

There’s a good chance of spotting Australian fur seals, dolphins and seabirds such as albatrosses or sea eagles along the route. Whales may also pass the coast during migration season, but every trip is different and wildlife sightings can’t be guaranteed.

Is the cruise wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The catamaran is wheelchair accessible and has space for two wheelchair users. Because capacity is limited and individual boarding needs vary, after booking please contact us with any mobility requirements.

What an incredible trip. The boat was comfortable, the commentary was engaging, and the scenery was unreal. You get so close to the cliffs — it’s absolutely mesmerizing. We spotted dolphins playing in the bow wave, which made the day even more special. It’s a short trip but packed with sights. I left feeling in awe of Tasmania’s raw beauty.

We weren’t sure what to expect, but this tour totally blew us away. From the moment we left the harbor, the scenery kept getting better and better. The cliffs at Cape Raoul are enormous, and you really feel small next to nature’s power. Our guide had the perfect mix of humour and knowledge, and the whole trip felt very personal. Would do it again!
