Plan for a big but well-paced day, leaving Hobart at around 6am and returning at around 9pm. Coffee, breakfast, dinner and comfort stops help break up the journey, while up to five hours in Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park gives you plenty of time to walk, take photos and enjoy the alpine scenery without needing an overnight stay.

You can match the day to your fitness and confidence. The Dove Lake Circuit is a moderate walk that usually takes a little over two hours, while the route towards Marion’s Lookout is more challenging and can take around three to three and a half hours. Easier forest and heritage walks are also available. Your guide will explain the conditions and walking choices before you set out, helping you choose the experience that suits you best.

The experience gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Your guide will explain the available routes, current conditions and meeting time before the main walking period. Guests choosing longer walks generally explore independently, while the guide stays available to support those who prefer a gentler option. Everyone meets again at the agreed location before continuing the journey back to Hobart.

You’ll stop in Deloraine for breakfast and dinner, with food purchased at your own expense. There is also an early coffee stop during the drive. Bring a simple picnic lunch, snacks and water to enjoy inside the national park, giving you more time to explore rather than leaving the walking area in search of food.

Pack for a true alpine day, where sunshine, wind, rain and cooler temperatures can all appear within a few hours. We recommend comfortable walking shoes, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sun protection, water and a small daypack. Bring your picnic lunch and snacks, plus a charging cable if you would like to use the USB ports on the bus.

Cradle Mountain gives you a good opportunity to look for wombats, wallabies and echidnas as you explore the forests, alpine meadows and button grass plains. Quolls and other native animals may also appear. Wildlife moves freely through the national park, so every encounter adds something special to the day.
