Leave Hamilton Island Marina at 8am aboard a purpose-built 24-metre reef vessel and watch the Whitsunday Islands fall away as you cruise towards Bait Reef. Morning tea and informative commentary are provided during the roughly two-hour crossing, with air-conditioned lounge seating and a partially shaded deck available along the way.
Once you reach the Outer Great Barrier Reef, the crew selects two snorkelling locations around Bait Reef to suit the conditions on the day. With a minimum of 3.5 hours at the reef, there is time for two separate snorkelling sessions and a proper look around the coral gardens, reef edges and open blue water. Keep an eye out for tropical fish and the other marine life that moves through this protected reef area.
Before entering the water, the crew helps you prepare your equipment and runs through the site and safety briefing. Experienced snorkel guides provide in-water support, while flotation jackets are available if required. You must be able to swim and feel confident in the water to take part.
Return to the vessel between snorkelling sessions for a buffet-style lunch, then gear up again to explore a different part of Bait Reef. After your second snorkel, relax onboard with afternoon tea as you cruise back through the Whitsundays, arriving at Hamilton Island Marina at around 4pm.
We had the most fantastic day. Everything was first class from the boat, the equipment, the staff and the food. I dived while my wife snorkeled and both activities were so professionally managed and delivered. Lots of staff to help in and out of the water. Great facilities on the boat and lovely food at lunchtime. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Our dive master was Leanne who was brilliant but all the staff were fabulous. We were made to feel very special – 5 out of 5
Such an amazing experience – we were lucky because we had ridiculously calm water and saw probably 20 whales, but even if we hadn’t I’d still highly recommend it. The snorkeling spots were incredible and the crew was super nice. Hope to do it again some day!

Know before you go
Yes. Bait Reef is an Outer Great Barrier Reef location beyond the Whitsunday Islands. This is different from shorter snorkelling tours that visit fringing reefs close to islands such as Hook Island or Haslewood Island.
No. This is a smaller-group, boat-based reef experience rather than a day spent at a fixed pontoon. You enter the water directly from the vessel’s lowered platform and snorkel at two locations selected around Bait Reef.
The cruise to Bait Reef takes approximately two hours each way. You will spend a minimum of 3.5 hours at the reef, including two separate snorkelling sessions, lunch and the time needed for equipment preparation and safety briefings.
Yes, provided you can swim and feel confident in the water. The crew provides equipment assistance, a safety briefing, experienced in-water support and flotation jackets if required. This tour is not suitable for non-swimmers.
The experience is recommended for children aged five and over. Younger children may be able to travel, but their participation in the water can be limited, so families travelling with children under five should contact us before booking. Any child taking part in snorkelling must be able to swim and follow the crew’s safety instructions.
Not necessarily. The crew selects two locations around Bait Reef according to the weather, sea conditions and visibility on the day. This allows them to choose the most suitable available areas, although water visibility and wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
Amazing tour snorkelling along the reef , lucky enough to see a couple of sea turtles and plenty of fish , would definitely recommend
Peyton and Archie were fantastic snorkel guides! We had a day that will be remembered forever. The whole crew on the boast was very accommodating and did a great job of making the day amazing. I would recommend this trip to anyone traveling to Hamilton Island.
The crew were all very happy and welcoming. They were very hard working and heartwarming like Peyton. The snorkelling was excellent and everything was enjoyable.
We did the full day snorkelling and dive tour, and while I’m normally a pretty critical traveller, I seriously can’t fault the day at all. Great direction and communication by the crew , who were engaged in making our day safe and memorable. Boat was super comfortable, clean and modern. The day had that smaller intimate feel, instead of being a mass volume rollout . Even the music was spot on , not annoying typical stuff. Food healthy for once , thanks ! Plenty of time in the water , no rush , and saw a manta ray !
Great day out from Hamilton Island. Young, vibrant and warm staff on board and well worth the money. Got to see some turtles nestling in the reef. Food on board was very good and plentiful.
