What to expect

Combine the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and the beauty of Fitzroy Island on this full-day adventure from Cairns. Start your journey aboard an air-conditioned catamaran to Sunlover Cruises’ Moore Reef Pontoon, where you’ll have two hours to explore the reef both above and below the water.

Snorkel among vibrant corals and tropical fish, join a guided marine naturalist talk, or experience the reef without getting wet on a glass-bottom boat or semi-submersible tour. Visit the underwater observatory, watch fish feeding presentations, and make the most of the pontoon’s facilities.

Next, cruise on to Fitzroy Island. Begin with a tropical buffet lunch at Zephyr’s Restaurant at Fitzroy Island Resort, overlooking the turquoise waters of Welcome Bay. Afterwards, enjoy free time to snorkel straight off the beach, take a self-guided National Park walk, or simply relax in paradise.

Optional island activities are also available, including guided nature walks, kayaking tours, or a visit to the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. Return to Cairns sun-kissed and inspired by the natural wonders of Tropical North Queensland.

We enjoyed the activities, we had plenty of time at the reef, snorkelling and bottom glass boat trip. The buffet was lovely. Fitzroy island was stunning and had lots of time to explore, snorkel and see the island.

Frequently asked questions

How is this tour different from a full-day outer reef tour?

This tour is a great choice when you want to experience two very different sides of the Great Barrier Reef in one day. You’ll spend around 2.5 hours at the Moore Reef pontoon before continuing to Fitzroy Island for lunch and approximately 1.5 hours of free island time. A reef-only tour gives you longer at the pontoon, while this tour adds rainforest, coral beaches and island time to the experience.

Is this tour suitable for non-swimmers or nervous swimmers?

Yes. You can experience the reef without snorkelling through the underwater observatory, glass-bottom boat and semi-submersible tour when operating, then enjoy lunch, Welcome Bay and the island’s walking areas. If you would like to try snorkelling, buoyancy equipment and instruction are available at the pontoon, allowing you to choose the level of support that feels comfortable.

Is this a good choice for families with young children?

Yes. The pontoon gives families plenty of choice, including an enclosed ocean pool, waterslide and dry reef-viewing activities, while Fitzroy Island adds lunch, beach time and a relaxing change of pace in the afternoon. Children must remain under parent or guardian supervision, and optional activities may have their own participation requirements.

How should I plan my time if I add an optional reef activity?

You’ll have around 2.5 hours at Moore Reef to snorkel, explore the included reef activities and enjoy any upgrade you have selected. Make your optional activity the anchor of your reef time and check its scheduled time when you arrive, then fit snorkelling, the underwater observatory, glass-bottom boat or waterslide around it. Choosing one main upgrade makes it easier to enjoy the pontoon without rushing.

Can I visit Nudey Beach during the Fitzroy Island stop?

Yes, the walk can fit into the island stop if it is one of your priorities. Allow approximately 45 minutes for the return track, which passes through rainforest and includes several stone steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes, take water and leave enough time to return to the jetty before boarding. Because lunch is also included during the island visit, this option is best for guests happy to keep the afternoon moving.

Where should I focus my snorkelling time during this tour?

Moore Reef should be your main snorkelling stop. It offers the longer, supervised outer-reef experience, with equipment, buoyancy aids and crew support included. Fitzroy Island also offers beach-entry snorkelling when conditions suit, but the island time is shorter and the experience is self-guided. Guests who want to snorkel at both locations can use part of their island time for it, while those who prefer walking or relaxing on the beach can focus their water time at Moore Reef.

What is the boat journey like if I am prone to seasickness?

Many guests who are sensitive to motion still enjoy the day with a little preparation. The first journey from Cairns to the outer reef takes around 1.5 hours aboard a large, air-conditioned catamaran, followed by the shorter journey to Fitzroy Island and the return to Cairns. Consider speaking with a pharmacist or doctor before travelling, take any recommended medication before boarding, eat lightly, stay hydrated and choose fresh air with a view of the horizon where possible.

Special shout out to ezzy the marine biologist on board ( if you get the chance definitely book in with her for her private reef tour. Definitely worth the money!! ) and Rem who showed us footage of whales the day before on his phone. You both made us feel very welcome
