What to expect

Spend the day where the Whitsunday Islands meet the outer Great Barrier Reef, with four hours at a floating pontoon above Hardy Reef and the freedom to explore in the way that suits you. Slip into the water among coral gardens and tropical fish, watch the reef through glass without getting wet, or add a dive or scenic helicopter flight for an even bigger perspective.

The pontoon gives every traveller more than one way to experience the reef. Snorkelling equipment, wetsuits and stinger suits are provided, while lifejackets and pool noodles offer extra support in the water. When you want a different view, step into the underwater observatory or join the included guided semi-submarine tour and look across the coral from below the surface.

Morning tea, a buffet lunch and afternoon tea are included, so you can move between snorkelling, reef viewing and relaxing without having to plan the day around meals. Optional guided snorkel safaris, introductory or certified scuba dives and scenic helicopter flights can be added at extra cost, subject to availability.

The scenic cruise leaves Port of Airlie at around 8am and returns at approximately 6.10pm, travelling through the Whitsunday Islands on the way to and from the outer reef. It is a full day with one clear reward — enough time at Hardy Reef to experience the Great Barrier Reef from the water, beneath the surface and from the pontoon in one trip.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to get in the water to enjoy this tour?

No. The underwater observatory and guided semi-submarine tour both let you see coral and marine life while staying dry. This makes the day suitable for groups that include both swimmers and non-swimmers.

How much time do we spend at Hardy Reef?

You will have approximately four hours at the Hardy Reef pontoon. The journey from Port of Airlie takes around three hours each way and travels through the Whitsunday Islands before crossing to the outer reef. Travel time can vary with sea and weather conditions.

What support is available for less confident snorkellers?

Lifejackets and pool noodles are available free of charge, and prescription masks are available for hire. Snorkelling guests should still be comfortable entering open water and must follow crew instructions. Anyone who prefers not to snorkel can use the dry reef-viewing activities instead.

Can I try scuba diving if I have never dived before?

Yes. Introductory scuba dives are available for guests who do not hold a diving certification, while separate dives are offered for certified divers. Diving costs extra and is subject to medical requirements and availability.

Is this tour a good choice for families?

Yes. The pontoon gives families several ways to enjoy the reef together, including snorkelling, the underwater observatory and the semi-submarine tour. The four-hour stay and included meals also make it easy to alternate between activities and rest. A child’s participation in water activities should match their confidence and comfort in a marine environment.

Should I prepare for seasickness?

The journey crosses open ocean, so the amount of movement depends on the wind and sea conditions. If you are prone to motion sickness, take your usual preventative medication before departure according to the product directions or advice from a pharmacist. Seasickness tablets are also available onboard.

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Access to the day-tour vessel and the semi-submarine at Hardy Reef involves stairs. The experience is therefore not accessible to guests who are completely wheelchair dependent.

Was an awesome experience! We did the scuba diving and snorkelling with my partner! The pictures are awesome! Not for weak swimmers when it gets a bit choppy!

This was a fabulous family day out!! We all loved the snorkelling experience and felt very well supported and safe in the water with all the staff around to help out at anytime. The different colours of coral and huge range of fish species was breathtaking. All of this was topped off with a close encounter with a Green Sea Turtle. We would book this tour again without hesitation.
