What to expect

Discover the Great Barrier Reef in a truly unique way on the Dreamtime Dive & Snorkel tour, which combines world-class reef exploration with a rich cultural experience. Your day begins aboard a modern vessel that takes you to two carefully selected reef sites, each showcasing colourful coral gardens, tropical fish, and diverse marine life.

With five full hours of water time, you can snorkel or dive among anemones, giant clams, sea whips, and plate corals. Spot clownfish, angelfish, and batfish weaving through the coral, while schools of trevally, red bass, and sweetlip gather nearby. Keep an eye out for turtles, rays, cuttlefish, and even reef sharks that frequent these waters.

What makes this tour truly special is the cultural connection. Indigenous Sea Rangers will share Dreamtime stories and explain the reef’s importance to the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji, Gunggandji, Mandingalbay, and Yirrganydji peoples. These narratives bring the reef to life, offering a deeper appreciation for both its natural and cultural heritage.

Morning tea, a buffet lunch, and afternoon tea are included to keep you refreshed throughout this unforgettable day on the reef.

The cruise departs from Cairns Marina at 9:00 am and returns to Cairns at 5:00 pm.

Please note: The minimum age to participate in scuba diving is 12 years old.

Best boat trip I’ve been on through my whole travels across the world. The crew were helpful, informative, supportive and friendly. They gave presentations of the Barrier and also about local cultures, we even got treated to a song and dance. The reef was beautiful and such a bucket list moment. In Saxon reef, we even met Frank.

Frequently asked questions

Which booking option should I choose?

Choose the snorkelling option for the complete reef cruise with two Outer Reef sites, snorkelling equipment, meals and the onboard cultural program. Choose the introductory dive option if you would like to try one supervised scuba dive without prior certification. Participants must be at least 12 years old and complete the onboard medical questionnaire. Certified divers can choose the certified dive option and must bring proof of certification. Whichever option you choose, the cruise and the rest of the included experiences remain part of your booking.

Is this tour suitable for first-time or less-confident snorkellers?

Yes. A full briefing, snorkelling equipment and flotation devices are provided. Crew support is available to help you feel comfortable before entering the water and while you explore, so first-time and less-confident snorkellers can enjoy the experience at their own pace.

Which reef sites will we visit?

The tour visits two Outer Reef locations selected from sites such as Milln, Flynn, Thetford, Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs. The final pair is chosen to suit the day’s conditions and operating plan, giving you two different reef areas to explore during approximately five hours at the Great Barrier Reef.

How long is the boat ride and what if I am prone to seasickness?

The crossing takes approximately 90 minutes each way aboard a fast, stable motor catamaran. If you are prone to motion sickness, take your preferred preventative remedy before departure according to its directions. Natural ginger tablets and Travel-Calm are also available to purchase onboard.

What cultural experiences are included?

The cultural experience is included for every guest, whichever activity option you choose. During the day, Indigenous cultural guides share a welcome, the Great Barrier Reef Creation Story and the Traditional Owners’ connection to Sea Country. The program also includes live dance and didgeridoo demonstrations, with opportunities to interact with clap sticks and fire poles.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes. Families have access to child-sized snorkelling equipment, flotation devices, sheltered seating, an air-conditioned cabin, toilets and included meals. Children under 16 must remain under adult supervision throughout the day, and the minimum age for scuba diving is 12 years.

What facilities are available and what should I bring?

The vessel has an air-conditioned lower cabin, an outdoor upper deck, sheltered seating, toilets and freshwater rinse showers. Bring swimwear, a towel, hat, sunscreen and a dry change of clothes. Towels are not supplied and there are no lockers, so valuables are best left at your accommodation.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

The buffet normally includes vegetarian and vegan dishes, along with several gluten-free and dairy-free choices. Food allergies and other dietary needs need to be advised in advance. After booking, please contact us with any dietary requirements.
