Make the most of your reef day with this unique tour that combines Green Island and the Outer Great Barrier Reef in one incredible adventure. Depart Cairns on a fast catamaran for a 45-minute journey to Green Island, a rainforest-clad coral cay. Spend two hours enjoying the island at your own pace — snorkel straight off the beach, stroll rainforest boardwalks, or simply relax on the sandy shores.
From Green Island, continue to the Outer Reef aboard Great Adventures’ spacious catamaran and arrive at the large activity platform. Here, you’ll have plenty of time to experience the reef your way. Snorkel amongst vibrant coral gardens, or stay dry with a semi-submarine ride and the underwater observatory.
For those seeking more excitement, optional extras are available including introductory or certified scuba diving, Seawalker helmet diving, underwater scooter rides, and even a scenic helicopter flight to view the reef from above.
This full-day tour offers the best of both worlds — the natural beauty of Green Island and the spectacular marine life of the Outer Reef.

Know before you go
Yes. Two hours gives you time to enjoy one main activity, such as snorkelling from the beach, together with a rainforest walk or some time relaxing by the water. The day then continues with three hours at the Outer Reef platform, so you can experience both the island and the outer reef without using separate days.
Yes. There is plenty to enjoy without entering deep water. At Green Island, you can explore the rainforest boardwalks, relax on the beach or enjoy the island surroundings. At the Outer Reef platform, the included semi-submersible tour and underwater observatory let you see coral and marine life while staying dry.
Yes. The combination of Green Island beach time, a stable Outer Reef platform and included dry reef-viewing activities makes the day suitable for families with different ages and swimming abilities. Children can enjoy the beach, look for marine life through the underwater observatory and join the semi-submersible reef tour.
Yes. Snorkelling equipment is included at Green Island and the Outer Reef, with demonstrations and safety guidance provided during the day. Green Island offers beach access and a lifeguard-patrolled swimming area, while the Outer Reef platform has a dedicated snorkelling entry point, lifeguard supervision and buoyancy vests available. Lycra suits are included at the Outer Reef platform. They are available for hire separately on Green Island.
Green Island offers relaxed, beach-based snorkelling around its fringing reef and seagrass habitat. You can enter from the shore and choose how much time you want to spend in the water. At the Outer Reef, you enter from the activity platform and swim towards coral gardens in deeper, open reef water. Doing both gives you two different reef settings in the same day.
A hot and cold buffet lunch is served at the Outer Reef platform, generally between approximately 1pm and 2.30pm. You can take a break from the reef activities and enjoy lunch at the platform’s tables, with both shaded seating and an open sundeck available.
The journey uses large, stable fast catamarans designed for open-water travel. If you are usually sensitive to motion, taking your preferred seasickness remedy before departure can help you enjoy the day more comfortably. Motion sickness tablets are also available onboard.
Amazing! Spent a few hours on Green Island. This was good as I could practice snorkling in warm water that I could stand up in. Then we went on to the pontoon. I can’t describe how beautiful it was being able to snorkle amongst the coral and fish. It was easy to get into and out of the water. I can imagine that the whole experience might not be as good if the weather was bad.
My Grandson and I did the green Island combo we had the best day ever. The outer reef was our highlight. We paid extra for the scuba do and that was amazing. Staff looked after us so well would recommend this day out highly
Excellent day, with stunning e patience’s and flawless crew assistance.
Very well organised tour and a highlight of your trip. Green Island was beautiful and would love to visit again. The pontoon is really well set up and was heaps of time to snorkel and we did the semi submersible boat last – which had the shortest line. Highly recommend
Everything was very good
