What to expect

Whitehaven Beach by morning and Hamilton Island by afternoon gives you two very different sides of the Whitsundays in one day. Walk barefoot across white silica sand and swim in turquoise water, then trade the beach for marina views, a relaxed pub-style lunch and an island afternoon you can shape for yourself.

Leave Port of Airlie at around 7.15am and cruise through the Whitsunday Islands, with brief passenger stops along the way. At the southern end of Whitehaven Beach, you’ll have up to two hours to walk the wide shoreline, swim in the shallows or simply stretch out on the sand. Protective stinger suits are included for the beach stop.

Hamilton Island brings a lively change of scene in the afternoon. Sit down to an included lunch at Marina Tavern, choosing one item from the selected menu, then make the island your own. Ride the island shuttle past key sights and lookouts, browse Marina Village, cool off at Catseye Beach or the main pool, or stay by the waterfront and enjoy the easy resort atmosphere.

The Hamilton Island portion is self-guided, giving you the freedom to choose your own pace. This itinerary visits the southern end of Whitehaven Beach rather than Hill Inlet and usually returns to Port of Airlie at around 6pm, after a day that balances beach time, island scenery and a relaxed afternoon ashore.

A great day out – Enjoyable day out today on Whitehaven Beach and then on to Hamilton Island for lunch. The staff were informative and polite, Liam even promised sun over Whitehaven for the 2 hours we were there after a very lumpy ride across and he delivered. A good day out!

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hamilton Island part of the day guided?

No. The Hamilton Island portion is self-guided. Lunch is included, and you can use the island shuttle, explore Marina Village, visit Catseye Beach or the main pool, or choose your own route around the island. Planning one or two priorities in advance will help you make the most of the afternoon.

How much time do I get at Whitehaven Beach, and does the tour visit Hill Inlet?

You’ll have up to two hours at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. The stop is suited to swimming, walking the shoreline and relaxing on the silica sand. Hill Inlet and the Hill Inlet lookout are not included in this itinerary.

What is included with lunch at Marina Tavern?

Your ticket includes one item from the selected Marina Tavern menu. The current menu includes choices such as pasta, burgers, salads and classic pub meals, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options marked on the menu. Drinks and any additional food are at your own expense.

Are transfers from Airlie Beach accommodation included?

No. The standard tour starts at Port of Airlie. Return coach transfers from selected Airlie Beach accommodation can be added for an extra charge. Many centrally located Airlie Beach properties are within walking distance of the marina.

Will I need to change vessels during the day?

A vessel change can be part of the connection to the Whitehaven Beach service. The cruise may also make brief passenger stops at Daydream Island and Hamilton Island. The crew will explain the connection and direct you to the correct vessel.

Is this tour suitable for families and non-swimmers?

Yes. It suits families who enjoy a full day out and prefer flexible activities rather than a fixed programme. There is no snorkelling requirement, so non-swimmers can enjoy Whitehaven Beach from the sand and explore Hamilton Island by shuttle, shops, marina and island sights. Swimming is entirely optional.

What happens if weather affects access to Whitehaven Beach?

The itinerary is subject to wind, tides and sea conditions. Northerly winds can prevent safe access to Whitehaven Beach, in which case an alternative destination may be visited. The route or timing may also be adjusted for passenger comfort and safety.
