Expect an active but rewarding day on foot. In the longer-day programme, the Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs circuits plus time around Darlington can add up to about 10km of easy-to-moderate walking. The pace is generally steady rather than fast, and the guide can discuss walking options with the group, but reasonable fitness, good mobility and comfortable walking shoes are essential. This tour isn’t suitable for wheelchair users or guests with mobility impairments.

Yes. Meals aren’t included, and there are no shops or cafés on Maria Island. There is usually a brief morning stop where you can buy a sandwich or roll, but bring your own lunch and snacks if you want more choice or have dietary requirements. Carry a full large water bottle as island water is limited and isn’t treated for drinking, and pack everything in a comfortable day bag.

Maria Island offers an excellent chance to see wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, pademelons, Cape Barren geese and a wonderful variety of birdlife in the wild. Tasmanian devils also live on the island, while the ferry crossing may bring sightings of dolphins, seals or seasonal whales. Your guide will help you look for animals along the way, and every day is different because the wildlife roams freely.

Yes, and each season has its own appeal. From October to April, the tour generally leaves Hobart at around 6.45am and uses the longer daylight for the fuller walking programme, including both main cliff circuits when conditions allow. From May to September, departure is around 8am and the guide shapes the island walks around the shorter day, the weather and the group’s pace. Return to Hobart is around 5pm in either season.

There can be time to enjoy the beach, take photos, explore rock pools or have a swim when the day’s timing and conditions suit. The main focus is the guided walking programme, so any swim is a flexible bonus around the walks rather than a fixed timed stop. Bring swimwear and a small towel if you’d like to take the opportunity.

This can be a brilliant wildlife-and-nature day for active families with children aged 8 and over. Children who enjoy walking can look forward to wombats, dramatic cliffs, beaches, fossils and convict history all in one day. The main consideration is the amount of walking and the need for each guest to carry their own food, water and layers, so everyone should have reasonable fitness and good mobility.
