Escape to Maria Island on a full-day active adventure, just a short ferry ride from the Tasmanian mainland. With no cars and limited facilities, the island feels like stepping back in time. Guided walks take you to the Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs, two of the island’s most striking natural wonders, offering dramatic views of the coastline and unique geological features.
Explore the World Heritage-listed Darlington convict settlement, one of the best-preserved probation sites in Australia, and learn stories of convicts, whalers, and settlers who once lived here. Along the way, encounter abundant wildlife — wombats grazing in the grass, kangaroos and wallabies bounding across the fields, and a chance to spot rare birds like the Forty-spotted pardalote.
With around 10km of easy to moderate walking trails, this tour combines history, wildlife, and scenery in equal measure. The ferry ride itself can be a highlight, with opportunities to see dolphins, seals, or even penguins. Maria Island is the perfect outdoor playground for adventurous travellers.
A fantastic day. Heather was a great driver, knew a lot about Maria Island and it’s lovely creatures, and it all made for a fabulous tour. A shame there was one couple that kept holding us up, and that meant we had a very short lunch break, which as an oldie didn’t leave a lot of time to catch your breath (we were a group of 4 aged between 69 and 71 years old)!! Would have been even better with an extra half an hour on the island!!
loved the Maria Island tour and our tour guide was so helpful and knowledgeable.

Such a great experience with Pete, one of the best guides I ever had…Untouched nature with interesting historical backgrounds. Several encounters with wildlife such as wombats, wallabies and kangaroos. Once in a lifetime experience.
It was amazing Heather was very knowledgeable and the day was so fun and exiting! Thank you Heather 😊
Amazing day exploring wild Maria Island. So much wildlife and interesting history! It was exciting to see so many wonderful Wombats, beautiful birdlife, wallabies, bandicoots, fossilised and naturally painted cliffs. Lucas was a very knowledgeable and relaxed tour guide. He knew the best spots for wombat spotting and encouraged respect for the environment. The hike near cliffs, amongst forests and on beaches was great and achievable. Only one short incline. Remember to stop, look and listen closely at rock pools, tree tops and on bushvwalks to experience beautiful wildlife, sea creatures and historical buildings. Such a peaceful place. I definitely recommend this great tour for nature and history lovers!
Extraordinary guide with breathtaking knowledge about all the questions and things about Maria Island and Tasmania as well.
Trevor was a wonderful guide. He was a treasure trove of information, a great story teller, and took good care of his guests.
