What to expect

Start your day with a relaxed city loop through Hobart, where your guide shares local stories as you pass the city’s key sights. The first major stop is kunanyi/Mt Wellington. At 1272 metres, the summit offers sweeping views over Hobart, the River Derwent and the rugged coastline—perfect for photos and a breath of Tasmania’s famously clean air.

On Saturdays, you’ll enjoy time at Salamanca Market, a lively mix of local art, produce and crafts. The tour then continues into the Coal River Valley for a quick cheese tasting at Wicked Cheese, followed by a visit to historic Richmond. Here you can explore sandstone buildings, boutique shops and the country’s oldest bridge.

The day ends at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where friendly kangaroos, curious wombats and the Tasmanian Devil make this a memorable wildlife encounter before returning to Hobart.

We had a wonderful tour with our guide Mark. We went directly to the Bonorang Wildlife center where we beat the crowds and was able to pet and feed Kangaroos. We saw Tasmanian Devils , Wombats and Echidna's, and heard commentary from Wildlife experts. Next we had a 1 hour stop in Richmond for a lunch break. (Not too exciting and many locations warned of long waits for orders, so we picked up just cookies and a Tasmanian version of a corn dog). We then we went up to the top of Mt. Wellington. It was beautiful. Our guide Mark was informative and funny. It was certainly worth it.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary was amazing - up close and personal with so many wallabies! Seeing the Tasmanian devil "in person" was great as well. We had plenty of time to interact with the animals. Other stops were the delightful town of Richmond, where we stopped for lunch, and then a visit to the lookout tower for fabulous views of the area. Our guide was relaxed, knowledgeable and fun.

Cancellation Policy

  • Customer-requested cancellations made at least 4 days prior to travel will receive a refund of 95% of the total booking amount. The remaining 5% will be retained as a non-refundable administration and booking fee. Cancellations made within 3 days of travel will incur a 100% cancellation fee, including no-shows.
  • Should supplier be required to cancel or the operation of the tour for any reason, including on the rare occasions due to inclement weather, an alternative date or itinerary will be offered to the passenger. If the alternative date or itinerary cannot be arranged or agreed upon, a full refund will be authorised. If the passenger accepts the alternative date or itinerary, no refunds will be issued.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the tour run, and what changes on Saturdays?

Saturday departures usually run from 8:00am to 4:00pm and include around 75 minutes at Salamanca Market. On other days, the tour generally runs from 9:30am to 4:00pm without the market stop.

Where will I be picked up?

Return transfers are included from selected Hobart hotels. If your accommodation isn’t listed but you’re staying in central Hobart, your assigned pickup point is normally a short 100–300 metre walk away. Your confirmed pickup details will be provided for your booking.

Is lunch included?

Lunch, drinks and paid tastings aren’t included. Richmond is the main lunch stop, with cafes and local eateries to choose from, and you’re welcome to bring snacks or water for the day.

What wildlife can I see at Bonorong?

You’ll have the chance to see Tasmanian devils, Forester kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, quolls and other native animals. Visitors can hand-feed the Forester kangaroos with the complimentary food provided, while animal visibility naturally varies throughout the day.

What should I wear, and what happens if Mt Wellington is closed?

Bring comfortable shoes, warm layers and a waterproof jacket—conditions at the summit can change quickly and may be much colder than Hobart. The tour operates in most weather, and if summit access isn’t possible, an alternative lookout such as Rosny or Mt Nelson may be used.

Is this tour suitable for cruise-ship passengers?

Cruise passengers should choose the dedicated shore-excursion version instead of this standard tour. It is scheduled around ship arrival and departure times and includes port pickup.

How big is the group?

Group sizes are capped at 20 travellers, keeping the day relaxed and personal. Transport is by air-conditioned minivan with live commentary from your guide.

The view from the top of Mount Wellington was good. I enjoyed seeing and feeding kangaroos and seeing other local animals like Tasmanian devils at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Andrew, the driver/guide, was very good at his job. He was friendly, knowledgeable and informative.
