You can spend up to four hours exploring Port Arthur at your own pace. This gives you time to visit the main historic buildings, gardens and exhibitions, join the included harbour cruise and focus on the parts of the site that interest you most.

Choose the full four hours if you want more time for Port Arthur’s historic buildings, stories and exhibitions. If Tasmania’s dramatic coastal scenery is equally high on your list, rejoin the vehicle after approximately three hours for the optional visit to Remarkable Cave and Maingon Bay. The cave visit involves 115 steps and takes roughly 50 minutes before returning to Port Arthur.

Your Port Arthur admission includes a complimentary 20-minute harbour cruise, offering a different view of the historic site from the water. The guided Isle of the Dead cemetery tour is a separate experience and is not included. Any additional Port Arthur experiences need to fit within the group’s scheduled visit.

You’ll travel with a knowledgeable local driver who shares commentary during the journey and at the Tasman Peninsula stops. At Port Arthur, you can explore independently using the included self-guided audio experience and complimentary talks available around the site. This gives you the freedom to spend more time on the buildings and stories that interest you most.

You can explore at your own pace, so the amount of walking is largely up to you. Port Arthur is a large outdoor site with hills, gravel paths and some steps, while benches and a courtesy buggy make several areas easier to reach. The optional Remarkable Cave visit is more active, with 115 steps to the viewing platform and back. The tour vehicle is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Yes. Lunch is not included, but Port Arthur has cafés, a restaurant and grab-and-go food choices. You are also welcome to bring your own food. If you plan to visit Remarkable Cave, allow enough time to eat before rejoining the vehicle.
