The tour normally includes a one-way journey from Belgrave to Emerald Lake Park through the Dandenong Ranges. Your Puffing Billy ticket is included, and the direction may be adjusted to suit railway operations on the day.

The itinerary usually allows around three hours at Healesville Sanctuary. This gives you time to explore at your own pace, see native Australian animals such as koalas, kangaroos and platypuses, and catch one of the scheduled animal talks or presentations.

Pickup and drop-off are at Hotel Windsor, 111 Spring Street, Melbourne. The tour runs for approximately eight hours. Seasonal pickup times generally fall between 8am and 10am, with return to Melbourne between 4pm and 6pm. The available time for your departure will appear when you select a date.

Lunch is not included, but there is time to purchase food during the day, usually at Healesville Sanctuary or Emerald Lake. Bringing a reusable water bottle and a few snacks is also a good idea.

Yes. The combination of Puffing Billy’s open-sided heritage carriages and the native animals at Healesville Sanctuary makes this a popular family day out. The full experience lasts around eight hours and includes some walking. Every child, including babies and toddlers, needs a booked child ticket.

On eligible services, guests aged four and over may be invited to sit on the carriage sill and dangle their legs outside. Children under four are not permitted to sit on the sill. Follow the instructions given by railway staff before departure. Children aged 4–13 inclusive must remain within arm’s reach of an accompanying adult, with no more than two children per adult. An adult who also sits on the sill may supervise no more than one child sitting on the sill. Sitting on the sill is not permitted after sunset. Anyone who prefers can remain seated inside the carriage.

Walking is relaxed and mostly self-paced, particularly around Emerald Lake and Healesville Sanctuary. Flat, closed shoes are recommended. Healesville Sanctuary has accessible pathways, but the combined day tour is not wheelchair accessible and cannot accommodate wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
