General Viewing is included, giving you access to the tiered beachfront grandstand and boardwalks as the little penguins return to their burrows. Premium viewing areas are separate from the standard inclusion, so this option is best for travellers looking for the classic Penguin Parade experience.

The Penguin Parade takes place around sunset, so the return time changes with the season. Arrival back in central Melbourne is usually around 9pm to 10pm in winter and about 11pm to midnight in summer. Plan for a full day and evening when arranging your schedule.

Meals and drinks are not included, giving you the freedom to choose what suits you on the day. There is usually time to purchase food at a local café, in Cowes or at the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre, depending on the day’s running order. We recommend eating before departure and bringing water and a snack for the journey.

Bring layers and a warm or windproof jacket, even on a mild Melbourne day. The Penguin Parade is an outdoor coastal experience and Phillip Island can feel cool and windy after sunset. Comfortable walking shoes will also make the train stations and boardwalks easier to enjoy.

You will have plenty of photo opportunities aboard Puffing Billy and along The Nobbies coastline. After sunset at the Penguin Parade, photography and filming are not permitted, so phones and cameras need to be put away while the penguins come ashore. Phillip Island Nature Parks provides professionally captured penguin images that visitors can download for personal use.

Yes. The steam train, coastal boardwalks and little penguins give children several different highlights throughout the day, while reserved train seating and organised transport keep the journey straightforward for families. The main considerations for younger children are the long day, the late seasonal return to Melbourne and that baby strollers and carriages are not accepted on this tour.
