The tour departs from outside Hotel Windsor at 111 Spring Street in central Melbourne. It uses one convenient CBD meeting point rather than collecting guests from individual hotels. Follow the pickup time shown for your selected travel date.

Allow around 11 hours for the full experience. The Penguin Parade takes place at sunset, so the pickup time changes with the seasons to keep the day aligned with the penguins’ arrival. The tour returns to central Melbourne later that evening and is scheduled to arrive before public transport finishes for the night.

Meals aren’t included, but there are opportunities to purchase both during the day. You can buy lunch around Emerald Lake and dinner at the Penguin Parade visitor centre. Bringing a few snacks and a reusable water bottle is also a good idea for this full-day itinerary.

Walking is spread across relaxed sightseeing stops rather than one long hike. You can take a leisurely walk around Emerald Lake and follow the Nobbies boardwalk for coastal views towards Seal Rocks and the blowhole. Flat, enclosed shoes will keep you comfortable throughout the day.

Bring layers and a warm jacket, even if Melbourne feels mild earlier in the day. Penguin viewing takes place outdoors after sunset, and Phillip Island can become cool, windy or wet. Comfortable enclosed shoes and a light rain jacket are useful if showers are forecast.

Photography isn’t permitted after sunset at the Penguin Parade, including on mobile phones. This protects the penguins from sudden light and disturbance. Once viewing begins, put the camera away and enjoy watching the little penguins make their way from the beach to their burrows.
