The included train ride normally travels one way from Belgrave to Lakeside and takes about an hour. You’ll journey through the Dandenong Ranges in Puffing Billy’s open-sided heritage carriages and cross the famous Monbulk Creek Trestle Bridge. Your guide will meet the group at Lakeside for the coach journey back to Melbourne.

You’ll usually have around an hour to enjoy Emerald Lake Park and the Lakeside Visitor Centre. There is time for a short lakeside walk, interactive railway exhibits, photos, or a coffee and light bite before meeting your guide.

Selected Melbourne city pickups normally take place between 7am and 8am. The half-day experience returns to central Melbourne at around 1pm, with the Immigration Museum commonly used as the final drop-off point. Your exact pickup details will be provided for your booking.

On eligible services, guests aged four and over may sit on the carriage sill with their legs outside after the railway team has given the safety instructions. Children under four are not permitted to sit on the sill. Children aged 4–13 inclusive must remain within arm’s reach of an accompanying adult, with no more than two children per adult. An adult who also sits on the sill may supervise no more than one child sitting on the sill. Sitting on the sill is not permitted after sunset. You can also remain comfortably seated inside the carriage if you prefer.

Yes. The manageable half-day length, one-hour train ride and relaxed time at Lakeside make this an enjoyable family outing. Children often love the open-sided carriages and the excitement of the steam train, while younger guests can stay seated safely inside the carriage with their parent or guardian.

Yes. The experience operates in most weather, and the open-sided carriage makes the fresh mountain air part of the adventure. Bring weather-appropriate clothing and wear warm layers in the cooler months. A light rain jacket is also useful when showers are expected.

There are no toilets inside the heritage carriages, but facilities are available at Belgrave Station and the Lakeside Visitor Centre. We recommend using the facilities before boarding, with another opportunity available when you arrive at Lakeside.
