What to expect

Set sail from Cairns aboard a spacious 32-metre sailing catamaran for a memorable day at Michaelmas Cay, one of the Great Barrier Reef’s most unique locations. Surrounded by fringing reef and home to thousands of migratory seabirds, this National Park offers a rare combination of marine and birdlife in one protected sanctuary. Visitor numbers are limited each day to help preserve its pristine environment.

You’ll spend 4 hours at Michaelmas Cay, with a range of activities to enjoy. Take the beach buggy transfer from the catamaran to the cay, then snorkel straight off the sandy beach in calm, sheltered waters perfect for beginners. Explore further with a semi-submersible reef cruise or join the marine biologist for a guided snorkel tour. Adventurers can also try an introductory scuba dive.

Back on board, enjoy morning and afternoon tea, plus a delicious hot and cold buffet lunch with prawns. Learn more about the reef during the marine biologist presentation. On the sail back to Cairns, relax under the sails with a glass of sparkling wine, cheese, and biscuits — the perfect way to finish your day on the Great Barrier Reef.

The cruise departs from Cairns Marina at 8:30 am and returns to Cairns at 5:00pm.

It’s just was an all around excellent experience. A great boat with plenty of space, fabulous, friendly, knowledgeable and super organised crew. My friend definitely wants to denote the exceptional toilets, that there were many of, clean and spacious. We’ve been on many similar tours, and the toilets on the boats no matter how big or small have always been a challenge and mostly not enough of. The destination and snorkelling was even better than expected and the catering was outstanding in comparison to other tours too. Overall it was a most memorable trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enjoy the reef without snorkelling?

Absolutely. The included semi-submersible reef tour lets you see coral and marine life while staying dry, and the short beach transfer uses a glass-bottom vessel. You can also enjoy the fish-feeding and marine biologist presentations, watch the seabirds and relax on the catamaran or sandy cay.

Is this tour suitable for first-time or less-confident snorkellers?

Yes. Snorkelling begins from the sandy beach at Michaelmas Cay, where the water is generally calm and shallow and the coral starts a short distance from shore. Equipment, a lycra suit, a buoyancy vest and a snorkelling demonstration are included, giving first-timers a comfortable way to ease into the water.

Is this tour suitable for families with young children?

Yes. Michaelmas Cay’s shallow sandy swimming area, beach entry and designated visitor area make it a relaxed choice for families. Children can enjoy the water with a parent or guardian nearby, while the semi-submersible tour gives the whole family another way to see the reef without swimming.

Will the catamaran sail under sail for the whole journey?

You’ll travel aboard a spacious 32-metre sailing catamaran, with the crew using the sails when the day’s wind and operating conditions are suitable. Motor power is also used when needed to maintain the planned journey and your four hours at the reef.

What should I expect if I am prone to seasickness?

The crossing takes around two hours each way, and the large catamaran has spacious indoor and outdoor areas where you can settle in for the journey. Complimentary ginger tablets are available onboard, and motion-sickness medication can be purchased. If you know you are prone to seasickness, it is best to prepare before the vessel gets underway.

Are there toilets on the boat and at Michaelmas Cay?

Yes, toilet facilities are available onboard the catamaran. There are no toilets on Michaelmas Cay itself, so it is best to use the onboard facilities before taking the short beach transfer.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

Vegetarian options are available in the hot and cold buffet, and menu items are labelled with their ingredients. Other dietary requirements need to be advised in advance. After booking, please contact us with any dietary requirements.

The whole crew Was fantastic! they seem to be happy to answer any questions you have and help you in any way they can. because I was not planning to go into the water I took the semi submersible submarine that had windows for viewing the corals and fishes. it was very good as well as the information presented. I was blessed with seeing a turtle on top of the water when we first got docked close to the island. I have plenty of food and drinks for you to enjoy. the island was interesting with all its Birds. and I even gave in and walked almost waist high into the water. it was very refreshing and beautiful.
