There are several simple ways to make the three-hour cruise more comfortable. Complimentary ginger tablets are available, and the rear of the boat generally has less movement. Keep cool, look towards the horizon and let the crew know early if you begin to feel unwell.

Seals, dolphins and seabirds are regularly seen along the Tasman Peninsula, while migrating whales may appear at the right time of year. Wildlife is free-ranging, so every trip is different and no particular sighting can be promised. The sea cliffs, caves, waterfalls and rock formations are spectacular in their own right.

You’ll spend about three hours at Port Arthur, including lunch and time to explore. Standard site entry includes the historic buildings and grounds, short guide talks and a complimentary 20-minute harbour cruise. If you want to join a talk or harbour cruise, plan those first so you can make the most of the visit.

Yes, there is a small marine toilet on board for use during the three-hour cruise. It is below deck and reached by four steps, and access may be paused in rough conditions. We recommend using the accessible facilities at the visitor centre before boarding.

Yes, children of all ages are welcome, and many enjoy the wildlife, caves and dramatic coastline. The boat portion lasts around three hours and the full day runs from early morning to about 6:00 pm, so it suits children who are comfortable with a long day on and around the water. Bring plenty of warm layers for them.

Travellers who can manage steps with assistance may still be able to enjoy much of the day, and parts of Port Arthur have accessible paths, facilities and buildings. The tour buses are not wheelchair accessible, though standard collapsible wheelchairs and walkers can be stored, and boat boarding varies with the jetty used. The onboard toilet is below deck, so the tour is not suitable if fully step-free transport and facilities are required.

Check in by 7:15 am at the Dock Head Building on Franklin Wharf, next to the Constitution Dock Lifting Bridge, for the 7:30 am departure. There is no dedicated operator parking, but all-day parking is available nearby at Evans Street Car Park or Market Place Car Park. The tour returns to Hobart at about 6:00 pm.
