The Cataract Gorge is Launceston’s urban playground. The locals love it. Visitors flock to it. Peacocks have chosen it as a permanent home. But have you ever walked it, paused and understood its impact across the generations? On our Gorge Tour we delve into the past. We don’t just walk across Kings Bridge but describe how it was made on the other side of the world in 1862 and the day it was meticulously moved into place. With our special interp aids, we’ll take you there.

The Gorge is one of Tasmania’s most visited tourist attractions. It just happens to be right on the doorstep of our Stillwater home base. After our briefing, we’ll step right into this natural wonder only minutes from the CBD. Find out about the Gorge’s past and changing landscape. Ask about manmade remnants still protruding from a gorge carved some 30 million years before during the Jurassic Period.

Across 2.5hours, find out how the Gorge was the original lifeblood of Launceston for much of the city’s early life and how today, it holds the very same importance. Learn about the most-loved picnic rocks through the years and how thousands would flock for swimming races.

We’ll then wander back to our home base at Stillwater Restaurant, Launceston’s premier dining venue, where our guests have the option of indulging in a sumptuous two course lunch with your fellow guests (option available at checkout). This is the way to experience our town.

*Minimum of two guests per tour. If it’s just yourself and your partner, no worries. Gather your friends to a maximum of ten per tour or contact us for a customised experience.

What is the maximum booking size?

We cap our tours at ten guests. However, we can accommodate larger groups upon request. If you are travelling in a larger group, just get in touch to organise a private tour or we may be able to arrange multiple tours departing at similar times.

Where can I park my car?

Parking is available nearby, next to the TRC hotel in Margaret Street. This is a short 5-minute walk from our departure point.

What do I need to bring with me?

We recommend guests bring the following items:

  • sturdy and comfortable closed toe shoes for walking. We do not recommend ‘flip flops/thongs’ for our walks.

  • small backpack or bum bag if you wish to carry a drink bottle, camera or personal items.

  • drink bottle. It’s a good idea to carry water although both tours have drinking foundation stops. No worries if you don’t have a bottle, we have reusable ones for purchase.

  • a sunhat/cap and sunglasses year-round. We offer sunscreen prior to departure but recommend you bring your own if you have special requirements.

  • a warm sweater, jumper or jacket. Especially in winter months, and even on sunny days, the winds by our river can be cool.

Do you hire equipment or raincoats?

We have limited quantities of rain jackets that guests are able to hire for a small fee should they wish. On rainy days we offer each guest complimentary use of our umbrellas.

Do I have to have lunch after the tour?

No, lunch is an optional add on for each of our tours but we certainly recommend it! Top off your tour with a dining experience in one of Tasmania’s best restaurants!

Can I smoke during the tour?

All of our tours are non-smoking.

Will I need food?

You are welcome to carry your own snacks on the tour. We do not offer food until the end of the tour. We recommend working up an appetite during the walk for the included sumptuous meal.

Do we still go if it’s raining?

Our tours operate rain, hail or shine. In the rare event it is unsafe to conduct a tour (e.g. due to a severe weather warning or closure of pathways and tracks), we will cancel the tour and provide you the choice of a full refund or to rebook on another tour.

Are there toilets along the way?

Toilets are located at our booking office at the start of the walk. There are also public toilets at some points along each of our walking tours.
