Begin your journey at Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal, just five minutes from Darwin CBD, and cruise across to Bathurst Island, one of the beautiful Tiwi Islands. On arrival, meet your guide and be welcomed into the Aboriginal community of Wurrumiyanga.
Explore the Early Mission Precinct, including a Tiwi-style Catholic Church, where you’ll learn how Tiwi culture has blended with Christianity. Spend time with Tiwi women as they demonstrate weaving, painting, and traditional crafts, before watching them perform a totem dance and a smoking ceremony to bless visitors.
Enjoy a delicious lunch served with local billy tea and damper, then take the opportunity to browse and purchase authentic Tiwi arts and crafts. In the afternoon, gain insights into the complex rituals of the Pukamani burial ceremony, one of the community’s most significant cultural traditions.
After a day of cultural discovery, return to the ferry port for your cruise back to Darwin.
Great day, so informative. The guides were generous sharing their beautiful unique culture.
Very good. The guides were great, very informative. The lunch was superb! I was disappointed that we did not get to do a craft activity – screen printing. That would have given the value for money 100%.
Please be at the Cullen Bay Ferry Terminal at 7:20 AM to check in for an 8:00 AM departure. The terminal is small, so the ferry is easy to find. Please note that the final departure time will be confirmed in your booking confirmation email.
It was just amazing and very interesting and the Tiwi people so lovely
This tour is so worthwhile and so well run. The Tiwi Islanders (especially our guides) were fabulous and so proud of their customs and traditions. Delicious lunch and fabulous day!
An exciting day of meeting new people, learning about and experiencing new culture.
Great day very informative. Our guide was very engaging and friendly.
A wonderful day with the Tiwi people. Our guide Freddie was very informative, and clearly enjoyed showing us his community and explaining their way of life. Everybody was so friendly, lunch was delicious, and we had a great time. The museum, church and craft centre were all extremely interesting. I could easily have stayed longer.
