What to expect

Minimum age requirement is 13 years. Bookings are not accepted for participants under 13.

Take on the ultimate rafting challenge on the mighty Tully River, one of Australia’s best white water rafting destinations. After pickup from Cairns, Mission Beach, or a self-drive option to the launch point, meet your expert guides and gear up with helmets, life jackets, and paddles. A full safety briefing and training session will prepare you for the adventure ahead.

Spend up to three exhilarating hours navigating Grade 3 and 4 rapids as you paddle through a dramatic rainforest gorge. This spectacular setting is part of a World Heritage–listed area and was once the venue for the World Rafting Championships. With no prior experience needed, your professional guide will provide constant support, coaching, and encouragement throughout the journey.

After conquering the rapids, relax and celebrate your adventure with a delicious dinner at the iconic Feluga Hotel. While you dine, view your action photos (available for purchase) — the perfect keepsake to remember an unforgettable day on the Tully River.

The team were very engaging from the start and tried to build energy within the group throughout. Transport took 3 hours to get from Cairns to the site. From there the activity was amazing, the scenery was spectacular and the guides (Sean in our case) were very experienced and fun to do the activity with. The photos were high quality and reasonably priced. Overall, we had a very fun and adventurous day.

Best river trip I have been on. Keaton and Johnny were the best guides. There were many exhilarating rapids. I felt safe the whole trip. Safety briefings made us feel confident in the event we fell out of the boat, we would still be safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour suitable for first-time rafters?

Yes. You do not need previous rafting experience. Before entering the river, the guides provide equipment, paddling instruction and a full safety briefing. Your guide stays with the raft throughout the experience, helping the team build confidence before taking on the more exciting Grade 3 and 4 rapids.

How physically demanding is this tour?

This is an active, hands-on rafting adventure with sustained paddling through Grade 3 and 4 rapids. A good level of fitness, confident movement and the ability to follow your guide’s instructions will help you enjoy the day. If you prefer a shorter introduction to rafting, the Barron Gorge half-day option has Grade 2 and 3 rapids.

Do I need to be a confident swimmer?

Yes. Everyone joining this tour must have competent swimming ability and be comfortable in moving water while wearing a life jacket. You must also be able to understand and follow the river guide’s safety instructions in English.

How much time should I allow for the tour from Cairns?

Allow around 12 hours for the complete experience. Cairns accommodation pickups currently begin at approximately 10am, with the return at around 9.15pm. The schedule follows the Tully River water-release timetable, so exact pickup and return times may vary.

Will I get completely wet while rafting?

Yes, getting wet is part of the experience. Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel and a complete change of dry clothing for after the river. Secure shoes such as trainers or adventure sandals are required, and hire shoes are available if needed.

Why can the departure and rafting times change?

Water flow on the Tully River is connected to releases from the Kareeya Hydro Power Station. The rafting schedule is arranged around these releases to provide the best available river conditions. Keep the full day free and use the confirmed pickup time provided for your departure.

How does this tour compare with Barron Gorge rafting?

Choose this tour if you want a full-day adventure with a longer journey through World Heritage rainforest and the greater challenge of Grade 3 and 4 rapids. Barron Gorge is the better choice when you want a shorter half-day experience closer to Cairns, with Grade 2 and 3 rapids and a more introductory feel.
