Travel east from Perth on a full-day journey into Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region to discover one of the country’s most iconic natural wonders — Wave Rock. The day begins with a scenic drive through the Perth Hills before arriving in York, the first township of the Avon Valley. Take time to admire its charming architecture and perhaps purchase morning tea in this historic town.
Continue through farming country along the Wheatbelt Highway, passing rural towns and even the unique Dog Cemetery, a tribute to man’s best friend. Upon arrival in Hyden, visit Hippo’s Yawn, a rock formation resembling a yawning hippo, before enjoying a traditional Australian country-style lunch. While here, you may also explore the local wildlife park, Antique Lace Collection, or Toy Soldier Museum.
In the afternoon, marvel at Wave Rock, a prehistoric rock formation shaped like a giant ocean wave, and learn about its cultural significance. The tour concludes with a visit to Mulka’s Cave, known for its ancient Aboriginal artwork, before returning to Perth in the evening.

Our tour guide, Frank, was engaging, funny, and full of interesting facts which is always important, but particularly on this very long trip (roughly 13 and a half hours). the wave rock was saved for last and is the highlight of the trip.
James was a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide. It’s a big day out but so worth it.
It was an excellent day! It was well paced with a great variety of experiences. The driver was very knowledgeable about the areas we visited and the history. Lunch was good and the people there were very friendly. The only suggestion for improvement I have is that it was advertised as a cultural tour so I was expecting more information about the Aboriginal country we passed through, the history and the cultural significance. We enjoyed the whole day and would highly recommend it to others.
Luke was an outstanding driver/guide. Really loved hiking around Wave Rock. It’s worth the long drive. Some people complain about the lunch. It is plain and simple, but it was good enough. People have to remember there isn’t as much culinary variety in isolated, rural places because almost everything has to be shipped in. I enjoyed the excursion very much and would recommend it, especially for those who love geology and anthropology.
We laughed all day. Great guide with lots of knowledge and facts of Western Australia. I loved seeing Wave Rock and the stops along the way were a good way to break the journey. The Wave Rock centre we you have lunch had lots of interesting museums attached for a quick visit.
