The day normally includes a self-guided hike at Mount Bishop, Pillar Point or Lilly Pilly, with the route chosen to suit the group’s fitness and conditions. The main options are generally Grade 3 walks with uneven ground, ranging from about 3.6 km to 7.4 km and around 1.5–2.5 hours. You’ll get the most from the day if you’re comfortable with a solid bushwalk.

Wilsons Promontory is one of Victoria’s best places to look for wombats, kangaroos and emus in the wild. Many travellers on this tour report memorable sightings, and your guide will help scan the areas where animals are often active. They’re wild animals, so every day is different and individual sightings can’t be guaranteed.

Lunch isn’t included, but food, coffee and drinks can be purchased at a local café on the way or at Tidal River. Tidal River is the park’s main visitor hub, with toilets and picnic areas, so you’ll have a practical break during the day. Bring a refillable water bottle and a few snacks for the hiking portion.

The tour is scheduled to depart Melbourne at 6:30am and runs for about 12 hours, so plan for an evening return around 6:30pm. Pickup is available from Mercure Melbourne Southbank, Regent Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre and Mail Exchange Hotel. Arrive about 10 minutes before your confirmed pickup time, and keep your evening flexible in case traffic or the day’s itinerary affects the return.

The Prom is beautiful in changing weather, and the day’s hike or stops may be adjusted if conditions make a particular trail unsuitable. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, warm layers and a waterproof or windproof jacket. That preparation makes the coastal lookouts, rainforest and beach stops much more comfortable.
