If this is your first night in Cairns, start with the Esplanade and Night Markets. Both are central, free to explore and easy to pair with dinner. Book a sunset cruise, Aquarium tour or live show if you would rather have a set start and finish.

1. Best things to do in Cairns at night

  • Walk the Night Markets and Esplanade for a free evening in the city centre; add the Lagoon during its regular hours.
  • Pair a sunset cruise with dinner near the marina for a date night.
  • Book a Cairns Aquarium Twilight or Night Tour when you want an indoor evening out of the rain.
  • Make dinner the event on a dinner cruise, or book a CPAC show or Tanks Arts Centre concert.
  • Take the Deadly After Dark sunset cruise for a Mandingalbay Yidinji cultural experience.
  • Join an Atherton Tablelands spotlighting trip for nocturnal wildlife.

2. Book a sunset cruise or Aquarium evening tour

The 90-minute sunset cruise leaves time for dinner. The Twilight Aquarium Tour ends at 5.15pm, or at 7pm with dinner. The Night Tour ends at 7.30pm, or at 9pm with dinner.

3. Walk the Esplanade and browse the Night Markets

Spend an evening in central Cairns without a car or an entry ticket. Walk the central Esplanade, browse the Night Markets and stop for dinner within a few blocks of the waterfront. Allow two or three hours for the Esplanade, markets and dinner.

Cairns Night Markets

The Cairns Night Markets open every day at 54–60 Abbott Street. The official operating-hours page lists the food court from 11am and most market stalls from 4.30pm.

Go after a reef trip or whenever nobody wants to commit to a set dinner time. You will find casual food, souvenirs, clothing and massage shops under one roof. It is touristy, but convenient when you want a meal and a browse in the city centre. Allow 45 to 90 minutes for a meal and a wander.

Cairns Esplanade and Lagoon

Along the central waterfront, you will find parkland, public art, marina views and plenty of places to sit. You do not need to walk the full 2.5 kilometres; the stretch between the Lagoon, marina and Night Markets is the part worth walking at night.

The Lagoon is free, with regular hours of 6am–9pm from Thursday to Tuesday and noon–9pm on Wednesday.

4. Watch the city change colour on a sunset cruise

The Cairns sunset river cruise lasts 90 minutes on Trinity Inlet. It starts and finishes at Wharf A at Marlin Marina. Commentary, one drink — beer, wine or a soft drink — and a savoury snack are included. Arrive 15 minutes before departure.

This is a waterfront cruise, not a reef trip. The boat follows the inlet past mangroves, rainforest-covered mountains and the Cairns skyline while the light fades. Book it for a relaxed date.

Want dinner to be the whole event? Spirit of Cairns runs a 2.5-hour calm-water evening cruise with a buffet meal. The buffet is served on board, so you do not need a separate restaurant booking.

5. See Cairns Aquarium after hours

Cairns Aquarium runs two guided evening experiences from Tuesday to Saturday; the full timetable is in the official Cairns Aquarium brochure. Both tours are indoors and feature animals from the reef and Wet Tropics. Their start times leave most of the day free for a reef, rainforest or island trip.

The Cairns Aquarium Guided Twilight Tour with Optional Dinner starts at 3pm and finishes at 5.15pm. Add the three-course dinner and you finish at 7pm. Book the Twilight session with younger children or when you want an early dinner before a dawn pickup.

The Cairns Aquarium Night Tour with Guide and Optional Dinner runs from 5.45pm to 7.30pm. The two-course dinner extends the night to 9pm. Book the Night Tour to keep the full day free and see the animals after dark.

Our guide to whether Cairns Aquarium is worth it covers the attraction in more detail.

6. Catch a show, live music or a late drink

See what’s on at Cairns Performing Arts Centre during your stay. Its program covers theatre, comedy, dance and touring performances. CPAC sits at Sheridan and Florence streets, close to the city centre.

Tanks Arts Centre brings live music and arts events to Edge Hill. It is outside the central waterfront, so take a bus, taxi or rideshare unless you are staying nearby.

Cairns’ bars, pubs and clubs are concentrated in and around the CBD. Start with dinner near the Esplanade or marina, then walk into the central streets for live music or a later bar. Stay near the waterfront if you only want a quiet drink after dinner.

7. Spend the evening with culture or nocturnal wildlife

Mandingalbay Yidinji Deadly After Dark

The Deadly After Dark Sunset Cruise is a two-hour Mandingalbay Yidinji cultural experience from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Check-in is at 5.15pm at C Finger, Marlin Marina.

The boat crosses Trinity Inlet to East Trinity and the Mandingalbay Yidinji Indigenous Protected Area. The evening includes a cultural presentation, light canapes and non-alcoholic drinks, followed by spotlighting through the mangrove waterways on the return journey. The evening focuses on Country, conservation and Traditional Owner stories.

Atherton Tablelands nocturnal wildlife tour

The Wait-a-While Rainforest Tour leaves Cairns at about 1.30pm and returns at about 9.30pm. Afternoon tea, dinner, hotel transfers, binoculars and wet-weather gear are included. Spotlighting after dark takes place near the Curtain Fig Tree on the Atherton Tablelands.

This is a wildlife day that continues into the night, not a quick city activity. Expect three to four kilometres of walking on ground that may be uneven or muddy. You need to walk one kilometre without assistance. Set aside the full afternoon and evening for this trip.

8. Pick the right plan for rain, children or an early start

What can you do in Cairns at night when it rains?

When rain settles in for the evening, head to Cairns Aquarium. The covered Night Markets are convenient for a casual dinner. Our Cairns rainy-day guide has more indoor ideas for the rest of your trip.

What can families do in Cairns at night?

With younger children, book the Twilight Aquarium session or keep the night simple: Lagoon, dinner and a short market browse. With teenagers, book the later Night Tour for a set activity ending at 7.30pm. For a flexible evening, have dinner around the markets or waterfront instead.

What works before an early reef departure?

Before an early reef departure, take the 90-minute sunset cruise or stay around the Esplanade and markets. Avoid a late club night before an early start at the marina.

9. A few things worth knowing before dark

Book cruises, Aquarium tours, cultural experiences and wildlife trips in advance. The Night Markets and Esplanade need no advance planning. Book dinner ahead if you want a particular restaurant or waterfront table.

Most central evening stops are close together. The Night Markets, Lagoon, Marlin Marina and CPAC sit in or near the CBD. Tanks is in Edge Hill, so arrange a bus, taxi or rideshare for the return trip. The nocturnal wildlife tour includes hotel transfers to the Atherton Tablelands.
